Forum of Federations wishes to offer its congratulations to His Excellency Abiy Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and to the people of Ethiopia, for his being awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Peace. Since coming to power in April 2018, PM Abiy has ushered in a breathtaking range of major economic and democratic reforms. In announcing the award the Nobel Committee recognized him “… for his efforts to achieve peace and international cooperation, and in particular for his decisive initiative to resolve the border conflict with neighboring Eritrea.” The Committee’s announcement also noted that “(T)he prize is also meant to recognize all the stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in Ethiopia and in the East and Northeast African regions.”
Ethiopia has been a partner of the Forum of Federations since 2006. Since that time, the Forum has worked in close partnership with federal, state and local governments as well as non-state actors on a wide range of initiatives aimed to support peace and good governance in the East African nation. Echoing the PM’s own sentiments, the Forum’s President, Rupak Chattopadhyay, stated: “This is a great day for all of Ethiopia. The Forum is proud to be associated with the Prime Minister, his colleagues and all the stakeholders who are working to deepen and consolidate reforms started by Prime Minister Abiy.”
