EVENTS HELD MARCH 2003 Prof. Nicholas Haysom former Legal and Constitutional Affairs Advisor to President Nelson Mandela, Dr P Saravanamuttu, Exective Director, CPA, Professor Peter Meekison expert on Constitutional Reform initiatives in Canada and Dr. Sujit Chowdrey seen here at a trilingual workshop titled “Federal Options for Sri Lanka”26th March, organized by CPA and the Forum of Federations. The objective of the workshop was to engage democracy and peace activists in discussion on the Canadian and South African experiences of Federalism and related issues. The Forum delegation also had discussions with the Batticaloa Peace Committee, the North East Muslim Assembly, officials of the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government and members of the armed services. Human Rights and the Peace Process: 11thMarch CPA organized a consultation between Mr. Ian Martin, Former Secretary-General Amnesty International, who is advisor on Human Rights to the GOSL and LTTE, and a group of civil society stakeholders, to flag key human rights issues in the Peace Process. Social Indicator, the Polling Unit of CPA and Friedrich Naumann Stifftung (FNSt) held a 4thseminar on Participatory Governance at the Ballroom of Hilton JAIC March. Mr. Pradeep Peiris of SI gave a presentation on SI’s 2001 March survey on “Solid Waste Management in Urban Sri Lanka” to an audience consisting of policy makers, local government officials and members of civil society. A Workshop series on “National Advocacy Campaign for the Right to Information” was held 28th March for Journalists in Colombo at MARGA Auditorium, Kohuwala. This was followed by a workshop series on the same theme on 31st March for Journalists from Vavuniya and Mannar in collaboration with the Vanni Journalists Association at Vasantham Inn, Kandy Road, Vavuniya. The British Council (Sri Lanka) are project partners for this workshop series. A Workshop on “Human Rights Benchmarks in the Peace Process” will be held on 2nd April 2003 at the JAIC Hilton from 9:00 a.m. onwards. This event is organised in collaboration with the Berghof Fo undation for Conflict Studies, as part of the CPA/Berghof Peace Roadmap Project. The study is aimed at providing an insight into peace building activities carried out by selected organisations to assist World Vision Lanka to design their future approach peace building. CENTRE FOR MONITORING ELECTION VIOLENCE-Akuressa Pradeshya Sabha Elections March 8th 2003 CMEV monitored the Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha Elections and concluded that this was relatively peaceful. Mr Ramiah has taken up a position at UNDP and Ms Selvanayagam intends to concentrate on her higher studies
