Program Series Forum of Federations MENA: Jordan

𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐪𝐚𝐛𝐚

Between November 18 and 19, 2023, Al-Thoria Center and the Forum of Federation Jordan, with funding from the Government of Canada, commenced a comprehensive training program on Gender and climate change targeted women members of elected councils (Governorate and Municipalities) and political parties, aiming to equip them with the necessary knowledge to actively engage in local discussions on climate change, raise awareness in their communities about climate-related issues, and formulate strategic plans to address the impacts of climate change.

A total of 18 women leaders participated in the training workshop, representing diverse regions and constituencies in Aqaba. Participants included members from the Aqaba governorate council and various Municipalities, including A Quweirah Municipalities. Additionally, seven women from political parties joined the workshop.

The first day of training focused on fundamental concepts of climate change and its connection to sustainable development. Eng. Ala’a Homaidan, a national expert, led discussions on the main impacts of climate change at both national and local levels. The second day delved into an overview of national policies and strategies related to climate change, emphasizing their integration into local planning to address community-specific needs. As part of the program, participants went on a field trip to the "Marine Science Station Aquarium," which provided valuable insights into local efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change in Aqaba.

Key priorities identified during the training included addressing littering, especially in the southern beach frequented by national tourists. Initiatives were proposed to incorporate sustainability measures in plans and implementations. Participants also highlighted the lack of collaborative efforts between local entities regarding climate change, emphasizing the need for a unified umbrella organization. Despite well-established waste management infrastructure, there was a call for more collaborative efforts, particularly in beach areas.

The training underscored the necessity for awareness programs targeting schoolchildren, with a focus on climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation, in addition to conventional waste management initiatives. Other identified concerns included the absence of education programs on climate change, weak enforcement of laws regarding harmful practices, and a lack of training programs targeting local leaders and activists.

During the second day, a specific issue was discussed—the littering problem in the Southern Beach. Participants engaged in a comprehensive analysis of its root causes, forming groups to develop action plans targeting identified issues. Root causes selected for action plans included low awareness levels regarding the impacts of littering on the local environment, climate change, and the touristic value of the area. Additionally, the absence of curricula covering climate change or environmental education in schools was recognized as a significant concern.

The training program incorporated a trip to the Aqaba Marine Reserve in Jordan, situated along the southern coast of the Gulf of Aqaba. The objective was to assess the impact of climate change on the different endangered coral reef types and and the challenges in restoring damaged reefs once they reach a critical point.

The overarching goal of the training program is to empower women leaders by providing them with the knowledge necessary to integrate climate change and environmental considerations into their assessment of local community needs. The intention is to enable these leaders to plan and execute local initiatives with a focus on climate change, thereby enhancing their ability to motivate and lead others effectively in climate-related endeavors. The program aims to emphasize the relevance of climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts at all levels, including individual roles as mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters.
